Good Points

Good casting's, machining, design and construction. Steel screw, Replaceable and reversible jaws. Replaceable pipe jaws further down throat. Swivel base with double, t-bar, lock-downs and toothed system in swivel base design ensures vice wont turn when locked down. Good clearance under jaws. A cylindrical screw housing deters waste build-up and fouling with the main key-way underneath avoiding abrasion and thus increasing tool longevity. Fully enclosed screw. Thrust washer at front of screw housing allows effortless operation and accuracy. Rubber stops on handle. Anvil. Four fixing points on base for greater stability and improved impact absorption.

Bad Points

Poor paint finish not adhering to metal (should have been powder coated). No bench template. Odd jaw sizes keep consumer "locked in" to tool distributor.

General Comments

This Snap-On WV1745 Mechanic ' s 4 1/2" Jaw Vise is a "bullet" type vice (American style) with the rear screw housing resembling a bullet round. The vice is branded and sold by Snap-On, but, is actually a Wilton vice made for them. Made in the USA, the vice follows the Machinist's vice pattern (60,000 psi - SG iron), also made by Wilton and are part of their "flag-ship" range. However, this vice only follows the design aspects of Wilton's Machinist's vice and, I suspect, are not as strong, utilising a, weaker, lower density iron than their cousins, but still; incredibly strong.

Having said all that; this vice is superb! In ease of use, accuracy, strength of design and good looks (from an engineer's point of view). This vice represents good value for money for a tool that will likely be used everyday. Not really for the DIY / occasional user (unless you prefer great tools).

As a side note: I find that taking pride in my tools allows me to take pride in my work - a genuine benefit I can pass onto the client - this tool gives me that.
