Bad Points

Some customer service call centre people unhelpful. Even though I had informed the branch of my student status, they did not change the status of my account. Will start to chase you for your overdraft even if you have only been overdrawn for a month.


General Comments

I'd been with HSBC for pretty much my entire financial life. From the moment I got my first part time job, through university, through my gap year and now through my master's. Recently, they began chasing me for an overdraft, even though I had only been overdrawn a few months in the ENTIRE time I had been with them. As they were ringing my home, I was not available and my parents gave them my mobile number, which, for some bizarre reason, they are yet to ring. Despite explaining repeatedly to them that I was currently a student, and it was a matter of literally two months before I'd be in a full time job, they demanded the money back within a 7 day limit. I had to take out a loan to pay off the overdraft so that it wouldn't affect my credit rating. I paid the amount off and immediately closed my account. The past month has been made difficult because of the people at this bank. Thankfully I closed down the account now, because I'll be considering a mortgage in a couple of years, and I don't want HSBC to get a penny. I've been overdrawn with Halifax since last September, and they haven't sent me so much as a letter. I don't understand why HSBC couldn't be as understanding.
