kmlee's review of Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

“At the Big 3 Brake Symposium 2002 Chysler is reported...”

★★★☆☆

written by kmlee on 07/02/2004

Good Points
2002 JGCL: There is a rising class action lawsuit against Chrysler for defective Brake Rotors for models 1999-2002. See the wesite: www.kgglaw.com/investor/jgc.html

Bad Points
my Rotors warped at 14,500 miles. Dealer denies this as a problem with their vehicle. I have the "correction package" for the problem that they say once existed in 2002. Guess what? the correction package rotors are warped, and the dealer refuses to replace the rotors or acknowledge the problem.

General Comments
At the Big 3 Brake Symposium 2002 Chysler is reported to admit the following:

- Takes a lot of heat (cherry red) to warp rotorrs, so main cause of rotor variation is not heat, but uneven wear. New calipers now available through chrysler dealers to solve the problem.

- Rotor Quality: Chrysler only uses damped cast iron. Is better than standard gray iron. But is softer and wears more when aggressive aftermarket pads are installed. ROtor quality and noise characteristics vary a great deal with quality of iron alloy and cooling process. If make rotor alloy harder to extend rotor life, it reduces the rotor's ability to handle heat without heat cracking.

- Premature pad or rotor wearout has always been a significant customer issue.

Joe008's Response to kmlee's Review

Is everyone stupid? I was a brake specialist for 20+ years. For the last 5 years I have been studying the laws of physics with my own research lab. When they first came out with "semi metallic" pads (early 80's) There has been nothing but warpage!!!! When metal rubs against metal there is an uneven trade-off of "METAL"! No unusually high heat. My first Jeep Gran Cherokee was a 2001. I drive like a person trying to keep everything perfect forever. Literally "I drive like a little old lady". Everything I own is in pristene condition. Yet, My Jeep rotors were warped every 6000 miles. At first I thought it was a fluke. After 12100 It happened again. But the dealer said they would only warrant the brakes 12000 miles but agreed to turn them. They lasted til 15000 miles. I traded the SUV in for a 2002 Jeep Gran Cherokee. Low and behold at 6000 it was back in the shop. This time I had taken it to a different dealer. They said the brakes were guarenteed for 36 months or 36000 miles. I had taken it back 6 times before the warranty ran out. But good news.....NAPA finally carries Acobano Organic Brake pads. They are the key for never warping. They will last an opproximately 40+K miles. But sure beats 6K for 2 rotors. I recommend Raybestos rotors for replacement. They can be purchased at PepBoys for 54.99 each. Don't have the rotors turned because they may be true but they are more than likely to be wobbly and cause the calipers to slide back and forth causing noise and wear.
