Fuel economy is 29 mpg combined, but for motorway driving the car can deliver around 35 mpg while cruising at around 60 mph with the gearbox set in economy mode. In this set up, the car will get around 450 miles out of a tank of fuel. Maintenance costs are high but relative in terms of wear and tear. A part may cost four times more than a part for some other cars, but may last four times as long. Also, it is wise to budget for the cost of maintenance. I find that tucking away £50.00 or whatever I can afford per month meets all of my twice yearly (depending on mileage) service costs without too much trouble. I use an independent mechanic and this also helps to keep costs down. Corrosion is an issue for most 300CEs in the front wings therefore it is essential to touch up every stone chip, keep the car clean, particularly under the wheel arches and wax it regularly.
For some time I have owned a 1991 Mercedes Benz 300CE coupe. It looks old when compared to the current stock of modern designed motor cars but it is an appreciating and reliable classic. I like it because it is different and makes an excellent daily driver. With all four windows dropped for pillarless driving, it is one step away from being a convertible. It is a car for those who like to cruise rather than race and the pleasure I get from driving it compels me never to rush to get anywhere. Better to look cool in a car rather than look aggressive, so cruising is far more palitable than racing for me. It is a practical car in that it comfortably seats 4 and has a very large boot. The 2962cc 6 cylinder engine is very smooth and has plenty of power for normal day to day driving and I never tire of design touches such as the seat belt presenters and the sport/economy gearbox settings.
