Good Points

High quality, Carl Zeiss lens produces very sharp images

Rechargeable InfoLithium battery is excellent

Camera very easy to use - my wife uses it daily!

USB-to-Computer connection flawless; camera appears as Windows disk drive.

Battery, charger and Memory Stick interchangeable with my Sony TRV10 camcorder.

Bad Points

Longer shutter lag than Canon and Nikon

Autofocus and autoexposure not always accurate

LCD impossible to see in bright sunlight (but optical viewfinder is available)

Lens cap not built-in

Adding filters requires expensive adapter which blocks the built-in flash

Sony MemoryStick flash memory storage not as universal as CompactFlash - no IBM hard disk option, standalone readers are more expensive

No manual exposure control

Zoom is only 2x (ok with me - it's one reason why the lens is so sharp)

General Comments

Digital photography is far from reaching the maturity level of film, and there is no perfect digital camera available. The Sony DSC-S70 is clearly one of the best in the world, and has taken most of the pictures I've posted at www.fototime.com (use the guest login of marshallg2000@yahoo.com to view my pages).

The photographs of flowers and the coins demonstrate the unbelievable macro focusing capability of the camera. It takes remarkable close-ups. I'm very satisfied with the quality, you can judge for yourself (NOTE: The low-res images were not taken with the S70).

Describing all of its features could take many pages. It is a 3 megapixel camera which can take stills and MPEG movies (with sound). A very easy-to-use menu lets you select various resolutions. A well-constructed hatch covers the InfoLithium battery and the MemoryStick. Small connectors on the camera support DC-in (for charging the battery), NTSC/PAL audio/video output, and external flash.

The camera's long shutter lag can mostly be mitigated by pressing the shutter release half-way, which locks in a focus and exposure setting. The effects of both settings are viewable on the LCD screen.

While each of this camera's competitors have something unique to offer as well, my wife and I are very happy with the results we get with this camera.
