General Comments
A far better name for this John Deere X540 Multi Terrain would be "The Brute" for that is exactly what it is. A brute of a machine with power emanating from its very core.
It copes with anything and leaves quite a good finish, not as good as the John Deere LT17 with the Freedom 42 mulching deck but acceptable never-the-less..
The controls at first sight look complicated in fact they are easy to use and intuitive. My machine is fitted with the 54" cutters and I particularly like the ability to clean the deck by simply attaching a hosepipe and running the deck. At first I thought the cruise control a useless extra. How wrong I was, it allows one to set a speed ideal for each set of circumstances rather than making the common mistake of going too fast. Driving the machine from task to task is as smooth as a quality car with an automatic gearbox. This mower can only be described as a professional machine and is best suited to users with a huge amount of lawns to take care of. The power steering is light as a feather and takes a little getting used to.
It does leave lines after a fashion but if you want nice lines then tow a roller as you cut. There's a whole host of add-ons available from a dozer blade to a snow blower.
To sum up; this is a serious mower that can double as a small tractor. Expensive it's true but the old adage "you only get what you pay for" must be borne in mind.
Why haven't I rated it a 10, only giving a 9? Simply because I believe that nothing is perfect.

I have now had the X540 for 4 years. Touch wood it has given no problems until now. A bearing gave out on the P.T.O. This I consider as acceptable.
