General Comments
Firstly Halifax supposedly sent a new bank card which did not arrive, then they took my existing one by forfeiture when I used it in a machine. They then froze my telephone banking when I could not remember the last transaction (to the last penny) and the exact date that I did it on the card. The ID I then took to the branch to unfreeze things was rejected even though it had been good enough to open the account just a few months before, and they refused to talk to me because I had not proved I was who I was. This prevented me from getting copy statements which had either not been sent or had gone missing, so that a payment in that did not happen resulted in my rent not being paid, which they charged me £35 for. I also could not pay my telephone bill without going overdrawn so could not access the internet (being cut off) to establish internet banking. No-one seems bothered at branch or customer service level, and I am still trying to sort out the mess. If you want trouble free banking, do not bank with Halifax. Oh, they also refused to transfer money from a savings account which would have saved the day. Eventually I had to draw cash from a machine with my savings card, then pay it in over the counter at the branch to my cheque account! When I can find the time, I will formally complain to everyone including their regulator, and change my bank. I will however leave the current account such that an amount of money goes in and out regularly so that they have the expense of dealing with this but with a permanent near zero balance so the account is a loss to them. Perhaps others will do the same, hopefully.

Mr Baker has clearly had a bad experience, but to generalise the entire call centre staff, and each individual employed therin seems a little severe. I have banked with halifax for 10 years with no adverse effects whatsoever, and on the few occasions I have contacted them, I have been dealt with politely, with grace and efficiently. So for one persons detrimental experience, there are those who find halifax to be competent and above average in a day and age when a lot of customer service does tend to be detrimental.
