Good Points

Everything about it

Bad Points

no optical zoom, but at the price it can hardly be classed as a bad point

General Comments

The Canon PowerShot A300 is a really good digital camera. It has the ordinary *auto* mode that enables it to be used as a simple point and click family camera, and also boasts numerous manual settings that can be defined by the more serious amatuer.
On standard shots the results are excellent, Macro (close-ups) of down to 1-2inches are razor sharp and extremely good quality.
The digital zoom is certainly adequate to cover most needs although obviously not as good as an optical zoom, but at the price of this camera one cannot expect everything.
It is the same as all digital cameras when using ordinary alkaline batteries, Useless!!
Rechargeables Ni-Mh at least 1300Ma are a must, 2300Ma are better again. Rechargeables are advised for ANY digital camera.
I used a set of 1300ma and managed to fill a 64Mb card with the flash and Lcd on constantly, therefore compared to similar cameras in its class the A300 is excellent in that respect.
Anybody considering the purchase of the A300 will find it very difficult to get a better camera for the price.
This little beauty is top of the leaque in every test I put it through. I cannot find ANY *bad points* with the A300. It truly is a excellent choice for either a first time digital-camera or for the person who would like to explore the more serious side of photography without spending a fortune. It is ideal for those first more adventurous steps into the more serious side of things as it has many different settings that you can alter in manual mode, more than enough, but just enough not to get you totally confused. Reading of the manual is a must or else you will end up with a host of features you know nothing about.
I presently own a Canon EoS-1 ds a Canon EOS ELAN 7e and an Olympus E-1 that I use in my work, and when I compare all of them in auto mode, the A300 can certainly hold its own even up against these and they cost 10/15 times the price
My advise to anybody is simple BUY IT!!..you certainly will not regret it.
