General Comments

We got the Bosch SGS6312GB 5 yrs+1mth ago and it has performed extremely well and very quietly for all this time until now when it has stopped heating the water. The cycle seemed to take longer and the dishes were not dry at the end. We have only used it once since this happened so I cannot tell how it would function if left in this condition.

Before I found this board I was thinking along the lines of heater element or thermostat failure although I was rather upset that this should happen in a BOSCH machine. I always held the company in high regard for reliability especially for mechanical engineering quality. I could find no easy access to the inside of the appliance so I was about to give up. However the various posts here led me to look at the control board which is where I found the "standard" fault.

You can get to the control board by unscrewing 6 to 10 screws on the inside stainless steel panel of the door. Unfortunately you will need a "star" screwdriver bit. If you only remove 6 it is rather difficult to get the control panel back in. You then have to undo some plastic clips on the circuit board's protective plastic cover. Two of them were very stiff. One of the pins on a relay towards the centre of the board was blackened and clearly not in contact with the circuit board. I'm not sure what this relay does but quite possibly it switches the heater element on/off, in which case it switches a high current load. This pin should normally be in contact with an off board supply lead. This can clearly be seen if you follow the circuit board track to the edge of the board.

In order to reduce the chances of this happening again I soldered a thick length (approx 1cm) of copper wire from an old mains cable between this pin and the pin coming from the off board lead. I was quite generous with the solder. I think trying to resolder the blackened pin to the circuit board is likely to either fail or suffer the same fate as the original contact. This solved the problem. It took me about an hour but if I had to do it again it would take a lot less.

I remain extremely grateful to all on this board that led me to the fault and saved me anything up to £150, hence my contribution! We are still happy with the washer but if this is a design fault (and based on posts here, it seems to be) I would have expected BOSCH engineers to replace this board and not charge you for the faulty circuit board. Having said that, appliances will eventually fail and I suppose they will fail at whatever is their weakest point. This might not necessarily be a design fault. I suppose it is up to BOSCH to be honest about this and act if their "return" figures indicate a problem. Anecdotal reports might not be enough.

Amazing! Our dishwasher developed a problem. Your review described the problem accurately. I followed the advice and found one solder point on the board with a black circle around it. Having resoldered this, the machine now heats up again. THIS IS CLEARLY A DESIGN FAULT so if you think about buying, perhaps think again.

    Power to the web!!
We had decided to replace our SGS6312GB (bought 1997) after experiencing the same problems - lack of heat and extended wash cycle (up to 5 hours!). I went on the web to find the noise dB level of the old machine, since it was not mentioned in the manual, and we didn't want a noisier macine. In so doing, I happened upon this dialogue. The fix works! The effort to repair the problem is definitely less that required to extract and dispose of the old machine and replace, perhaps with an inferior one - and you saved us a few hundred quid. Many, many thanks!!
