It does work, if you stick to it. The group ethos helps greatly.
The counseling assumes that all clients are dysfunctional eaters ignoring e.g. drug treatment causes of weight gain insulin resistance which makes weight gain easy and weight loss difficult etc.
There were people in my group whose bmi was below the optimal for their height after some months of the diet who should not have been permitted to continue.
I and a few others had difficulty in losing, for myself I never cheated, but only lost 8lbs per month after an initial large weight loss in the first weeks, no doubt fluid loss, however, combined with a poor reaction on the keto stix I felt that i had to
convince the counsellor that I was not cheating. I also resented the implication that I would have "pigged out" given the opportunity, prior to the programme. I did take this up with the counsellor privately, I am not sure she was convinced. I do think the cousellors should have a better grounding in physiology, particularly as it has now been shown that obesity is indeed heritable (as if some of us did know that already!)
Since losing 5 stone I have been on an almost constant diet to keep off the weight. I have consulted a dietitian and a Diabetes consultant, who confirmed that I do have early metabolic syndrome, am pre diabetic and insulin resistant, which as I mentioned above makes weight loss difficult and weight gain easy. This condition is also heritable. It is crucial that one keeps ones weight down. This information should be acknowledged by the programme. One size does not fit all. Now that I am on Metformin, It is much easier not only to keep my weight stable, but the Keto stix turn pink, as they should have done during the programme. Counselors should be aware of this if confronted by slow weight loss which is not due to non adherence to the programme. I think some of us found it difficult to square Lighter Life`s received wisdom that slim people are like that because they work at it when it seemed to me at least, from first hand experience that some people are just made like that. Since developing a weight problem 15 years ago I have eaten much less than my immediate family; they are all slim and I am not. This is a fact, and it is depressing to be told you are wrong.
In conclusion I would do the programme again if I needed to, but I do not think I could face the assumption that we are all in our overweight conditions for the same reason, therefore all needing the same cbt counseling. We are all made differently.
