Compact, well laid out controls, EXCELLENT screen, good solid construction and reasonable quality lens. It would be hard to find a better 3" LCD on any camera at any price.
Autofocus has a mind of its own - want that bird on a branch? You'll likely get a nice clear photo of the forest behind the bird and a nice fuzzy pic of the bird & branch! You could switch to using Manual Focus but by that time the bird will have died of old age. BTW - the built-in flash is weak & produces unpredictable results - lots of wildly overexposed shots.
The Canon G9 PowerShot is a very flexible, very compact instrument that will travel well in a purse or coat pocket and grab that snapshot quickly.
If you're a serious photographer you'll likely want the flexibility of use and higher quality results obtainable with even middle-of-the-road DSLRs.
Oh yes... the 12.1 Megapixels? In my view, the results are no better than a camera with half that number. But then, I've not tried to make enlargements from either. On a computer screen I see no difference. Don't buy this camera because of it's "megapixels."
