Live for ages!
Are prone to this yucky white filmy fungus which can kill them.
The Beta fish is the ultimate hard-wearing, long-living fish for those who want a fresh water fish that you can keep in a bowl without expensive filters and heaters and the like. The males are very pretty fish with long showy fins and come in a variety of colours such as red, blue, purple, or a combination of the lot. You do, however, have to be careful because if you get too much nitrogen (I think it's nitrogen) in the water they develop this horrid white filmy fungus. We had to purchase special drops from the pet store (they weren't expensive) to make certain that the water was the right balance for the fish.
Also, take note, because you can only keep one male per tank because they will puff up and fight each other to the death. One is generally enough however. Mine swam around his tank quite happily for 2 years before succumbing to old age (as well as 3 cross country car journeys and 2 plane flights).
