Great family dog.
Greedy!!
They have a tendancy to suffer with their back legs in old age as quite a few larger dog breeds do.
My golden retriever is now 12 years old and I have owned him from being a puppy at 12 weeks old.
I've found him to be a great family dog and he has been good with my children who are 1 and 3 years younger than than him. He's always been full of energy and needed a good daily walk which was still not enough to tire him out sometimes.
He's an even-tempered dog and will gladly do what I ask of him, yet I feel he thinks he shouldn't be discluded from the family anytime and hates being put into another room or locked outside if I have company.
If pushed, he will stand his ground and growl but has never lost his temper or bit one of the family.
He house trained quite fast, and has also been a good guard dog with a fierce bark.
In his old age he is still as greedy and tends to be most comfortable laying down under the cooker as I make the evening meal.
On the whole, if thinking of buying a dog I would recommend the golden retriever breed for families - but you must dedicate the time to the dog for lots of exercise.
