Good Points

Great price, good styling, clear, easy to understand manual, component & s-video inputs and outputs.

Bad Points

The remote control could be laid out better.

General Comments

I bought this Philips DVD R75 dvd recorder on 01/07/2004 to record primarily some non-copy protected VHS movies and home videos shot on tape.
I tested the finished DVD's on three other DVD players I have... a Sony DVP-S360, a Apex AD-600A ( yes, the one with the loophole menu) and a Panasonic DVD-F85 carousel player for compatability and was pleasantly surprized!
The Sony and Panasonic played both the finalized +R and +RW discs instantly, while the Apex would not play the +RW disc but played the finalized +R discs perfectly!. (There is a "fix" noted in the manual for older players that won't play +RW discs but I did not try it yet).
I also tried various recording modes and found they ALL played well (especially the 1, 2 & 2 1/2 hour modes), source material is important here.
All other functions I tried ( I tried most of them) worked as advertized.
I did not download any firmware up-dates as I have encountered no problems.
There is a web-site I found that extoles the virtues of the +RW/+R format (dvdplusrw.org), it's loaded with useful information.
I did not try any timed recordings yet but I've read there may a few problems.
Overall I'm impressed and you can't beat the price!

    Update from joe roscoe...
    March 17, 2004
Thus far I have burned over 60 disc's and haven't made a coaster yet!
I've tried several timed recording's and have experienced NO problem's.
I opted for this type of DVD burner because I'd much rather record using my home theater set-up than using my home computer system.
    I've tried music cd's I've burned (WAV & MP3 format's)as well as store-bought music & have encountered NO problems.
    I've watched several dual-layered DVD's & haven't encountered ANY skipping or lip-sync problems reported with some player-burners.

Since my last update I've burned well over 100 DVD's and haven't made a bad one yet!
I've expirenced NO over-heating problem,(it's nested in-between my Sony VHS player/recorder and my Sony DVP-S360 DVD player in my home theater set-up).
I've NEVER recieved any error or NO DISC messages as some have reported (perhaps those who recieved these and/or other error messages should download and install the latest firmware update from the Philips site).
I've used this machine to record several television programs and haven't had a problem as yet.
I ONLY use Memorex, Sony or Philips blank DVD's and I don't buy in bulk amounts.
And NO I don't work for Philips or own stock in their company, I'm just a consumer who did my home-work BEFORE purchasing this (or ANY) electronic gear.
    I'll keep you posted...
