Easy to use, large membership, free, lots of opportunity to communicate and participate in different ways. I've had some excellent success meeting great women. I haven't graduated to long-term yet but I have met some people who have become good friends.
The system is fine, the negatives lie with some of the participants. There are a percentage that communicate in a reasonable way and others that are snide, or downright rude as far as I am concerned. On another dating site there is a button to give an automatic "Thanks but, No thanks" reply, and the system encourages you to let people know that you received their message but aren't interested. Receiving an email and simply not replying yet as far as I am aware. I've had women contact me and they ignore and then delete my reply with no explanation as far as I am aware. I suppose that people feel that rudeness is acceptable when they have a level of anonymity and an internet barrier between them and others.
Plenty of Fish should have a mandatory reading section as part of the registration that encourages appropriate communication styles, and built in systems that provide an easy way to respond to messages that indicates that they received the message, but they are not interested.
POF should encourage a code of behaviour. People are becoming more and more comfortable with treating others in a shabby way. POF has a large membership and could act as a change agent.
Maybe there should be a rating system or a forum to discuss negative experiences with specific users.
