I first got a hamster at the age of 6. They make great first time pets as they are slow and quite low maintance. They also only bite if in pain or feel threatened.
Bad Points
Hamsters only live for about 18 months and it is very upsetting when they die. This is why I now have gerbils, which live about 5 years.
General Comments
Although hamsters make great pets as they do not move very fast, I do feel that it is very upsetting the pet dying after you have spent 18 months bonding with it.
