Variety of things to choose from.
Great catalogue.
Baby layettes in particular of good quality.
Some items overpriced.
No qualified shoe fitters, despite being a childrens shop which supplies toddlers shoes.
Unhelpful staff who seem not to know about their own products.
Items not in stock.
I have had many problems with Mothercare, the first was when I had phoned my local branch in Surrey Quays to see if they had the highchair I wanted in store. They told me they had and I went to purchase it within the store, upon arriving I was told by a rather brash member of staff there wasn't any. My husband then asked if he could buy the £29.99 model we wanted which was on display at a discount, despite the model on display coated in a layer of grey dirt and the harness straps generally dirty she said we could have it at a discount of a mere £2. I passed. I also visited this branch to buy a pair of shoes for my son, as these were his first outdoor walking shoes, I needed them properly sized and found a pair I liked, I asked if there were anyone or anything which could tell me my sons foot size, the member of staff told me to just put the shoe on and feel where his toes are. Sorry but isn't it one of the basic rules that a toddlers shoes need to fit correctly?
A second time visiting another branch elsewhere, I bought a walking harness for my son. I bought it with intentions of using it straight away, I stopped on a bench outside the shop and tried to work it out, I had difficulty reading the vague instructions and found it hard to put together, I found the mothercare harness to be quite short and didn't realise at the time I made the simple mistake of leaving the high/pushchair adapters on . So I took it back into the store and asked a member of staff to help, I was greeted with a blank face when I asked if she could help me assemble it and she tried and fiddled with it but couldn't make it out, it took two more members of staff and feeble attempts at trying to solve it until yet another staff member worked it out. It was an easy mistake to make but you would think that Mothercare staff would know a little about there products.
Now, visiting the branch in Lewisham, I am expecting baby number two and asked in store if they had a catalogue, I was told they had and a member of staff fumbled around behind the counter for one until she pulled out one a little worn and rough round the ages. I didn't mind this but arriving home and flicking through there were numerous post it notes stuck within the pages of many customers personal details including names, addresses, phone numbers and what they had ordered. This was very careless and I would not like my details to be left about in this way.
I will not be going back to Mothercare again. I am going to buy things for baby number two from Babies R Us, who seem to sell items cheaper, as for clothes, I like Mothercares baby layettes, they are of excellent quality, withstand washing and come in many designs but I do find clothes and outfits for older babies and toddlers do not withstand washing and lose their shape, fade and bobble after one or two washes which is a shame concidering Mothercare doesn't come cheap for such items.
