Apple iPod Mini - 1st Gen

“The Apple iPod has enjoyed massive successes in the...”

Good Points
Scaled Down in Size (9.14cm x 5.08cm x 1.27cm)
Weighs in at a tiny 104 grams!
Comes in a variety of colours instead of boring white.
Stores a quite impressive 4 GB of data (about 1000 songs)
Includes all of the features of its older brother, back lit display, easy to use menu system and an improved version of the scroll wheel.

Bad Points
Will cost around £199 GBP which maybe more expensive than some of its nearest rivals.
I have heard some complaints about the non replaceable battery in the iPod and this is still included in the iPod mini.
Will not be released till April 2004 in the UK (February 2004 for American readers)

General Comments
The Apple iPod has enjoyed massive successes in the portable mp3 player market with anyone whose anyone sporting one. It is held in high acclaim by audiophiles all over the world and its younger brother the iPod mini looks like it won't disappoint either.

It comes with a vastly reduced 4 GB of storage over the iPod which can be bought with 10 times the storage space of the mini but this can be forgiven as the iPod mini is a fraction of the size.

It will be compatible with MP3, AAC, WAV, AIFF and Audiobook's. It will be able to sync with iTunes and will be, like the iPod, compatible with both windows and Mac machines.

The new variety of colours will be a welcome change from the plain white iPod and will allow people to show off their own personality more. Apple has said it will be compatible with all of its current accessories and is bringing out a slew of new ones to go with the iPod mini including new clips and holders to transport your iPod mini around with you.

I will not be trading my iPod in for this model purely because I prefer to carry around more tunes with me but for people browsing for a smaller mp3 then the Apple iPod mini has to be a tempting proposition.

Currently the iPod mini is being released in the US with a price tag of $249 USD (=£162 GBP) whereas in the UK it will clock in at £199. (=$362 USD) Making us British pay £38 more for an identical product seems very unfair so fingers crossed Apple will review this price by the time April comes around or it may face more competition from its nearest rival Rio who are offering a similar product and have yet to disclose the price.

*I have not yet heard the iPod mini so cannot comment on the quality of sound. Therefore I will rate it as an iPod proper as I guess they will not be too different*

Im not so sure about the silver i used to think blue was best, however after geting my ipod im starting to see the merits of the white. The only bad thing about it as far as i can see is the fact i can't wear the white headphones on the street as i don't want to get mugged. Apart from that i'd say it's the best mp3 player out and it's only a pity the mini's launch in europe has been postponed

No, feel that silver is the best. Personally, I'd prefer to have a choice of colours than merely a plain white iPod. (Naturally, I mean no disrespect for the people who like white).

Also Xp sees the mini as a hard drive also and you are able to put other files on it. It also has software installed on it to read documents typed in Microsoft word and software to see contacts in your adress book. Take that competition!!!

I own one! I believe am the first with an informed opinion on the subject.
I will break it down int easy chunks.
Looks and feels great.
Sound Quality great (not as good as Creative MUVO 2 sound though
Touchpad Wheel-ok bit fiddley. fat people would struggle
Uploading-fantastically fast
Software-simple effective (iTunes)
Charge time-4 hours is ok
Battery Life-8 hours- but not actually. lucky if you get 6- 8 is based on no backlight, same song continuous play etc. So thats poor.
Overall it is a great bit of kit. Not aimed at techies wanting geek-ike stats and features. Its for people who enjoy listening to music, and it is the best Mid-memory MP3 player on the market. As for price, us British are as tight as ducks areses anyway. Live a little.

It took me about 30 seconds to download itunes and 10 seconds to transfer my music files onto it. I think 40 seconds is no hardship! the muvo has the same playing time, and in some cases apple has underestimated the playing time and it is actually 10 hrs. Plus the Muvo is ugly!!!

I happen to own a Creative MuVo 2 4 GB and I can tell you that it is far from ugly. It also is smaller that the Ipod Mini and has a changeble battery. Another big plus is that Windows XP sees it as a mobile HD and you can therefore use it almost everywhere.
The Ipod needs special software and allegedly has a bad playing time. I\'m not saying the Ipod is bad but I just think it is not that good either.
I think many consumers are blown away by the \"Ipod Hype\" (MTV clips and commercials make it popular and \"cool\") and should look around for an alternative for the overpriced and overestimated Ipod.

Am i being inredibly naiive and predictable by saying that the iPod's looks is one of its main attraction. Everybody likes choice and Apple knows this and is merely catering to this need. If you really wanted an ugly MP3 player you could always try the Creative Nomad MuVo 2. I however care what mine looks like and don't mind paying a bit extra for that.

"displaying your personality" with the the new colors of the minis is exactly the kind of illogical crud the marketing devils at Apple,
and most other modern corporations, want you to be talking about. but this blather has no place in a review which should be based on
technical features. basically-- the unwritten
ugly truth about most Apple products is that they are priced for suckers who are reeled
in by "cool" design and colors. How is the actual functional use of an ipod superior to anything out there, aside from its damn "look"? Noone seems to be answering this question.

And the award for stating the obvious goes to you - lwxgcg! Did i at any point claim i did have one - it's not even released for a couple of months. I quote "*I have not yet heard the iPod mini so cannot comment on the quality of sound. Therefore I will rate it as an iPod proper as I guess they will not be too different*" It would be a bit stupid to buy one of these, before the release, then not actually listen to it?!

This review was purely to provide information on the iPod mini before it comes out for people who may be researching it. Im sure other people will be able to review it fully when it is released!

Thank you for the helpful comment anyway! - anwyl
