Scaled Down in Size (9.14cm x 5.08cm x 1.27cm)
Weighs in at a tiny 104 grams!
Comes in a variety of colours instead of boring white.
Stores a quite impressive 4 GB of data (about 1000 songs)
Includes all of the features of its older brother, back lit display, easy to use menu system and an improved version of the scroll wheel.
Will cost around £199 GBP which maybe more expensive than some of its nearest rivals.
I have heard some complaints about the non replaceable battery in the iPod and this is still included in the iPod mini.
Will not be released till April 2004 in the UK (February 2004 for American readers)
The Apple iPod has enjoyed massive successes in the portable mp3 player market with anyone whose anyone sporting one. It is held in high acclaim by audiophiles all over the world and its younger brother the iPod mini looks like it won't disappoint either.
It comes with a vastly reduced 4 GB of storage over the iPod which can be bought with 10 times the storage space of the mini but this can be forgiven as the iPod mini is a fraction of the size.
It will be compatible with MP3, AAC, WAV, AIFF and Audiobook's. It will be able to sync with iTunes and will be, like the iPod, compatible with both windows and Mac machines.
The new variety of colours will be a welcome change from the plain white iPod and will allow people to show off their own personality more. Apple has said it will be compatible with all of its current accessories and is bringing out a slew of new ones to go with the iPod mini including new clips and holders to transport your iPod mini around with you.
I will not be trading my iPod in for this model purely because I prefer to carry around more tunes with me but for people browsing for a smaller mp3 then the Apple iPod mini has to be a tempting proposition.
Currently the iPod mini is being released in the US with a price tag of $249 USD (=£162 GBP) whereas in the UK it will clock in at £199. (=$362 USD) Making us British pay £38 more for an identical product seems very unfair so fingers crossed Apple will review this price by the time April comes around or it may face more competition from its nearest rival Rio who are offering a similar product and have yet to disclose the price.
*I have not yet heard the iPod mini so cannot comment on the quality of sound. Therefore I will rate it as an iPod proper as I guess they will not be too different*
