Nice big shiny store. *Looks* professional
Customer service lady admits no computer knowledge, which really helped...Promises broken. Like talking to a brick wall!
I got my Advent 8115 laptop from Currys for my 21st birthday and from the beginning the wireless card didn't work. I thought maybe it was just a weak one and just got a wireless usb adapter to boost the signal, after all i'd only spent £420 on the laptop.
Then on having to clear up viruses from the computer, i noticed that the wireless adapter was failing...the usb slot had broken. I took the computer back to the store, to see what my rights were. They gave me an 0844 number to call, and i had to do 3 calls in total to do the whole restoring the hard drive and then having to reinstall the whole lot--and because it was a display model i had to do the long route without a boot disk.
I mentioned the USB slot having broken, and they responded "Sorry, that's likely your own fault, so that's outside warranty." Fair enough.
A week later...ALL the 3 usb slots had broken--no way had I broken them all! The wireless card still didn't work despite the hard drive being redone. I phoned the tech guys and they agreed i ought to be given a refund or replacement.
I took the laptop and packaging back to Currys and they refused on the refund or replacement, insisting instead that I must send it to be fixed through their people first, and would not budge on this matter.
On asking how long it would take, they responded "Up to 28 days."
In the meantime I have degree coursework to do and no laptop to do that on. I suspect that the laptop will return with its usb slots still very iffy and prone to damage, seeing as they were big enough to waggle the usb keys around in, whereas a good usb port should fit a usb key snugly and tightly.
I asked them what would happen if it broke again outside the year warranty in the same manner. They said that if i got the extra protection, i'd be fine...
I asked, doesn't that cos money?
Yes of course. A monthly fee.
I've had to call the trade standards complaints to find out my rights...apparently i have to wait for them to fix it and for it to break again. When it does, if they still refuse to refund, i'll have to pursue the refund through the credit card company.
