Good Points

Nice looking machine and suppose to provide good clear recording.

Confusing to read, operate and not user friendly


General Comments

After hours of set up since 12/20/03 now 1/06/04, reading thru a very confusing manual the set up of the guide + system on the Philips DVD R80 is still not working. I took it back to where I bought it and they could not get it to work. I have a cable set up and now after calling the manufacturer Phillips they indicate that if I want to watch the TV for the next 24 to 32 hours it will be flickiring and changing channels for that time frame until the guide + inputs the TV channel data. This is inconvenient and not sure it is worth the trouble. I am planning to get the Phillips 75 since the main reason for purchasing the unit is to record from old Hi 8 tapes. Wish me good luck.

    The manual is badly written, but the guide plus system will update. You must power off the recorder overnight, contrary to what the manual says! I phoned technical support and they were very helpful.

    Upgrading the firmware on the recorder fixed a few issues and the whole system works very well.
