Good Points

Lovely location, great staff and service and comfortable beds!

Bad Points

Some people would complain about the size of rooms, but they'd simply be spending too much time in their rooms! We paid no extra levy's and got a small room at the back of the hotel, on a quiet road (unlike the front) and with a nice mountain view.

General Comments

The hotel was clean, well kept and the staff were fantastic. Our room was quite small, but as mentioned above, if that is a problem for you then you're spending too much time in your room.
There are many restaurants and shops along the lake and most of the staff there have a basic knowledge of English, so you'll never feel too out of place.
If you're there on a Shearings coach trip then you usually won't have to worry about things to do, but for those who aren't then ferry and bus services are available quite regularly to take you about. Ferry tickets can be bought from the offices by the dock, and bus tickets can be bought from the shop around the corner from the hotel; with these you can easily get to small towns and villages around the lake, including Bellagio and Mennagio.
The town of Tremezzo is literally about 5 minutes along the lake, and has some nice bars and restaurants, including a cafe where you can get an "English Cream Tea with a lake view!" There are also postboxes here if you aren't comfortable leaving postcards etc. with the hotel to post (we posted some here late on in our week trip and a few got back before we did, so we were impressed!)
In all, if you expect a five star hotel then don't bother. The Brittania Excelsior is a 3 star hotel, you get a buffet style dinner, a nice, well stocked bar, and a comfy room. If you really desire a balcony and a lake view then by all means pay for it, but we found our room sufficient, after all if you want to enjoy good views, just go for a walk around the lake, it's 30 seconds from the hotel!
In all, we had a brilliant week, no hitches, no complaints and we had a great time. We enjoyed Cadennabia and Bellagio far more than we enjoyed Milan! A great place to stay!
