Very light and simple to use. Well featured and with an excellent rear screen display that is easy to see/use even in bright light.
Very good white balance control which does a good job on auto and an even better one when set to the specific light type.
Full choice of exposure / metering modes. Program / aperture priority / shutter priority / full manual and various custom function for sports, night time / scenic etc which are mostly a combination of adjusting the lens focal length and exposure combinations (sharp / soft).
Built in flash (not very powerful) but with a proper hotshoe for an external gun.
The D40X is an uprated 10 megapixel version of the old 6megapix D40 but with a better sensor and improved focus motor in the new lenses (they have II stamped under the barrel).
Good entry level DSLR.
Comes either as body only or with an indifferent 18-55mm zoom which isn 't much. Its a re-tread of the old Nikkor 28-85mm 35mm lens of 20 years ago.
Bad Points
Very flimsy build and could do with a protective cover over the rear screen.
No focus motor in the camera which limits the outofocus lens range available to newer Nikkor's although the older ones will still fit but only work on manual.
No depth of field preview button and no indication of focus distance in the viewfinder.
18-55 lens is a budget special. Not very wide and not really a telephoto. Quality poor. It vignettes (cuts off the corners at 18mm and shows significant barrel distortion). Satisfactory at mid range F8 but won't win prizes for overall performance.
General Comments
The Nikon D40x good budget camera but nothing particularly special. There are better items out there. However at the moment there are some excellent Nikon factory reconditioned cameras for sale. They are excellent value at significantly less cost than a new unit. If bought make sure they come with the Nikon recondition certificate and the 90 day warranty certificate.
