I departed Kigali, Rwanda via Addis for Tel Aviv, Israel. I have made this flight a number of times, and have never had any problems. However, when I arrived in Ben Gurion Airport I was told that my suitcase did not arrive with me.
I had been in Kigali, Rwanda for two months and had a vast number of items with me in my suitcase. These were not things that I simply took for a vacation, but rather, expensive clothes, foot-ware, work tools, jewellery, electronics, and many memorable gifts from Kigali. I have attached the list of our lost items, so you yourself can see what I lost.
After I left the airport, no one from Ethiopian Airlines contacted me about my suitcase. I repeatedly had to contact the Tel Aviv office myself to see if my suitcase had arrived, and later, what the status of my claim was.
The Manager of the Ethiopian Airlines Tel Aviv office who I was referred to, should be ashamed of the assistance he gave me. He never once contacted me to advise me about the status of my claim. In fact, it was not until February 2008 - more than two months after my suitcase had been lost - that he even offered me the $50 to help me purchase new items.
I did not receive a response from Ethiopian Airlines regarding my suitcase until March 2008 more than FOUR months after my suitcase had been lost. During this time, I had to buy new clothes jeans, t-shirts, sweaters, jackets, as well as new toiletries, shoes, jewellery, electronics, work tools, new suitcase and I had no gifts for my family from my two months in Kigali. I have spent more than $2000 replacing these items.
Following Ethiopian Airlines review of my lost items list, the company opted to give me $350 for everything.
I was, and still am, disgusted with this amount of money. In this day and age, the company should know quite well that a suitcase alone costs more than $200. I am horrified that I received no words of apology, or assistance from any Ethiopian Airlines office.
To add further insult to injury, today is April 5, 2008 and I still have not received the $350. I am repeatedly told the cheque will be delivered; however, nearly FIVE months later, I am still a frustrated customer.
I have been a long time customer of Ethiopian Airlines, however, I have never been so disgusted with the unprofessional level of service that I received. You should not only be ashamed to offer a customer so little for their claim, but also for continually making a customer chase this money.
By behaving this way towards me, you have lost yourself a customer.
