We liked the kind and competent flight attendants: always polite, spoke English well, available. The food was good--there was enough of it and a nice variety of items. The flights departed and arrived on time, and baggage claim was easy.
On an 11 hour flight from Honolulu to Taipei, we were horrified to discover that on our aircraft, an Airbus A340, every window seat had a metal box, about the size of a shoebox, was affixed to the wall in front of the seat such that the person in the seat could not put his left foot down in a comfortable place. My traveling companion had to twist herself into two different kinds of pretzel in order to give her legs some stretching (and she's only 5'3"). Who designed this feature of this aircraft? We will never fly on this model of aircraft again. Another problem with this plane, again at the window seat: instead of room to extend one's shoulder and head into the space by the window, there is a gap that seems to serve no purpose other than to force the passenger who wants to sleep, to put all their pillows on this shelf to make it usable, to the peril of the rest of one's body.
One last thing: on an otherwise good flight home, my video screen didn't work. Only one channel came through.
All in all, it was fine for me, but not for my companion. The only big problems were aircraft-related. We had a stroke of good luck on the return flight: the Airbus was unavailable, so we had to "settle" for a Boeing 747. The flight home was quite comfortable, even though the plane was full and I was wedged into a middle seat.
We would fly China Air again.
