Good Points

Inexpensive. Light. Good size screen. Quality results.

Bad Points

Ridiculously short battery life. No case. Too many complicated functions for an entry level camera.

General Comments

I bought Canon PowerShot A300 as a Christmas gift for someone new to digital cameras and was told it was the perfect first camera. It was embarrassing that after 20 minutes the batteries died, I thought there was a problem but we went through 3 sets of AA batteries in 2 days.

The camera is too complex to figure out without the instructions and the batteries don't last long enough to let you experiment. After a week of frustration I exchanged it for the Nikon Coolpix 2500, which promises to be simpler and has the all important rechargeable battery!

I must say I agree whole heartedly with this review. I am about to send the A300 back to the seller for the 2nd time due to the terrible battery life. The manual says 210 shots on AA batteries or 90 in continuous use we got about a 1/4 of that with range of batteries of period of testing. Very disappointing considering all the good reviews. Also I did find the control system unecessarily complex comapred to Fuji F601 which I already own.

Simply using rechargeable NiMH batteries is an easy solution: for a modest initial outlay, you get 2-3 times the life of single-use alkaline batteries per charge, and up to ~1000 charges.

You should only use non-rechargeables in digital cameras as a last resort! Because of the high current requirements of digital cameras, I think that the "short battery life" criticism is not really fair if one isn't already using NiMH rechargeables.
