General Comments

Bet they dont have meatballs in there , reads the Ikea poster on the approach to this years Ideal Home Exhibition. Ah, methinks: if Ikeas on the defensive, this is going to be worth every penny of the 11 pound ticket price. So, in I go, purchasing a 5pound centenary exhibition guide (scarcely more than a list of exhibitors, interspersed by a few ads) en route.

This is my first time here, so I can only go on expectations. But from the moment I walk in, my gut asks Ahem, where is everything?

Apart from Poggenpohl, the only kitchens I can see are those lining the perimeter of the exhibition hall, selling expensive sandwiches. There is a paucity of bathrooms, too: just one supplier with any room sets, which are unfortunately not to my taste. Surely, kitchens and bathrooms should form the heart of an exhibition like this? If anything, thats been given over to gaudy hot tubs and garden spas, which are disproportionately in evidence.

Overall, The Ideal Home Exhibition, which so spectacularly wastes this giant space, more resembles a covered market than a ground breaking exhibition. Ikea have nothing to fear. Nor do MFI, John Lewis, DFS, Habitat, or the other usual suspects. Frankly, a brief visit to any of them is time better spent than a day at this Daily Mail-patronised farce.

This year is something special, promises the Ideal Home Exhibitions website. A more accurate introduction would be one-hundred years old, and totally exhausted.
