Script was meant to show us from where the various themes and scenes from Austen's book were part of her real life. Similar to Shakespeare in Love in that aspect, although the story attempts to be less comic and more realistic.
Tom LeFroy's part was played by a man much smaller than Austen's character. The result was high heeled boots and cutaways to half shots. Not noticeable the first time around, but this is a movie you'll want to watch several times.
The film makes the point: had Jane Austen been successful in love and had "a baby a year" from the man who obviously adored her as she adored him, we would never have been blessed with Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, etc.
Austen died early. Imagine that, had she borne several children, she definitely would not even have had the chance to write those gems in her old age.
