I have been banking with ING Direct since January 2004 when I opened a Savings Account with them. I have always used their online banking facilities to manage my account and I have found this service to be perfectly satisfactory. As an existing customer the interest rate I am receiving on my savings is a pretty meagre 5.05% AER. I see that the bank is offering new customers an introductory rate of 6.0% AER (including a 0.95% bonus for 12 months after which time the savings rate reverts to the variable rate which I am presently in receipt of). On seeing this I felt that, for being a loyal customer of the bank, I was being penalised. I phoned the customer service line to query this and see if the bank would offer me any inducement to keep my savings with them as many other banks were offering much better deals. I was informed that as an existing customer I was eligible to invest my money in a six month fixed rate deal which would pay me 6.4% AER. I was informed that this offer was only available on deposits of more than £25,000. I commented that there was no mention of this offer on the bank's website, in the financial sections of any of the major newspapers nor had I received any literature from the bank to let me know that this offer was available. I was told that the bank did not publicise this deal, instead only informing customers of its existence when, like me, they intimate that they will move their money elsewhere. This is both poor customer service and a questionable business practice. As a result that's £35,000 of my money that ING Direct no longer has.
