VTR Firestorm's review of Honda VTR1000 Firestorm 998

“Always having ridden multi's I wanted something...”

Good Points
Love the V Twin exaust note with the mufflers out of the Staintune cans. Comfy to ride over long distances which I do a lot. Powerfull brakes.

Bad Points
My only real gripe is the pathetic range from the fuel tank. These bikes were obviously not built with Australia and its vast distances in mind. Things might be ok in Europe or the USA where there is a service station every 10 minutes up the road, but out here you can ride for hours and see nothing.

General Comments
Always having ridden multi's I wanted something different and a V Twin fitted the bill. Harleys were out as I have always resented paying $15000 for a bike and then the same again for the name. Ducati's were way out as I hate the way they try and manipulate the superbike rules (1200cc) for them this year as a case in point. Finally narrowed it down to the TL Suzuki and the VTR Honda. Always having been a Suzuki fan since racing a 250 hustler on short circuits in the early 70s it was looking good for the TL until I remembered the run in I had had with my local Suzuki dealer in 1981 over a new bike with a new helmet thrown in which they said was and when I picked up the bike suddenly was'nt. After all that the Firestorm got the nod and I have no regrets, I have ridden my VTR to work and back six times now, only six times I hear you say, well one way from home to work is just a shade under 1700klms so not a bad run non-stop eh, as I said above my biggest gripe is the range between fill ups, if I doddle along at 110-120 kph I can get about 200kms to a tank but if I sit on 180kph which both me and the bike enjoy range drops to about 120kms per tank which is rather pathetic and means I have to carry a 10lt jerry can with me. I will keep the VTR for a while as other than the one bad point I love riding it but if I ever do trade on it will be to something with a bigger tank.

I’ve owned 1 of these found it to be awesome a well under estimated bike true the tank range is pathetic on the early ones but you can change to a later tank with more capacity.
<br/>Only other thing I had with mine was water penetration past the from ht lead cap as its right in line with the front wheel and it caught all the road muck and water so would miss every sp often other than that an awesome bike.
