Good Points

Extremely accurate, pellet on top of pellet, without a problem using bipod.

Bad Points

Slightly heavy and firing mechanism is only noisy if airgun has been tuned.

General Comments

I purchased the webley raider two months ago after previously owning many different airguns including pre-charged and spring powered. I personally tune all my airguns and have achieved 28 ft/lb quite easily from the raider. I prefer to use it for pest control now rather than my shotgun.
The raider is extremely accurate and provided the correct silencer is used is reasonably quiet. At 28 ft/lb you will only manage 30 shots from a full charge and if you are using the hand pump it will use 4.5 pump strokes per shot. At the standard 12 ft/lb you would normally achieve 60-70 shots and would only require 2 pump strokes per shot fired.
I have downed foxes without a problem, provided that it is a head shot and that the shot is placed "square on" the shock wave produced on impact stops them dead!
The trigger adjustment is a bind because the stock has to be removed to gain access, other than that, it's a mighty fine, robust sporting gun.

I am considering the purchase of a two shot webley raider air rifle. My 12 bore tends to scare everything off after one kill so I want something a tad more sneaky... The limiting factor I have is budget.
What is the best silencer for this rifle? How do you go about tuning it and how easy is it to tune? I will primarily be after rabbits, pigeons and other vermin on farm land and buildings. I would also consider bigger quarry like foxes on the farm, but would need a sight more than 12 foot pounds.
I prefer to stalk and fire from as far out as I can so once again I need more power. Can anyone advise?

    Very helpful

  3. Pecontools. on 5th Jan 2002

    Deacon,
I find the Daystate "wisper" silencer not too expensive but extremely effective.
Tuning the Raider can be done simply by replacing the striker spring with a stronger one. You should be able to achieve 28 ft/lb with this simple MOD. Any further power increase will require more technical modifications.
    Hope this helps.

having bought the webley raider single shot at the end of 2000 and having downed many a rabbit and pigeon with the full legall limit power, I feel I should comment on it in order to give it some of the credit it deserves.
As everyone seems to think, and I must agree, it is slightly on the heavy side which I find helps with the stabilisation. The accuracy is like no other weapon I have ever used ranging from spring/gas ram right upto most calibers of rifle including the Bretta .50 sniper rifle. My shots are keyholed at 35 yards and can hit a 10p piece consistently at 40 yards. The bipod is a great help when stalking or waiting in ambush. With the correct scope (BSA Contender in my experience, 6-24x50) there is no reason to miss, only bad shotting practice and it is easily possible to pinpoint the exact point of impact of the pellet. Such as under the feathers of a pigeon during winter when they puff them selves up which can soften the blow of the round!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a fantastic well built air weapon! top marks to the boys in research and development...!!!!

    For Pecontools:
    A few questions:

Which verion of the Raider did you get - single or 2 shot?
    Which calibre?
How do you identify the triking spring and where do you obtain alternative springs?

  6. Alan. on 15th Sep 2002

Hey. I was planing on buying a good quality pre-charged Air rifle. I shoot pigeons with shotguns at the moment and fancy a change. I think my minds set on a raider 2 shot th 12ft/pds. A few questions though. With a silencer is the sound totaly reduced? and does it affect the power or accuracey? How hard is it to fill and what about the saftey? How hard is it to fill using the pump and how compact is the pump. Cheers fellas

  7. Lawrence. on 31st Dec 2002

I have tried searching the net for hours and can't find any manufactures to purchase an uprated striker spring from. Can anybody help? It would be most appreciated!

  8. dog. on 2nd Jan 2003

where do i get an uprated striking spring from i've tried all my local gun shops and no one sells them?

  9. spooney. on 14th Jan 2003

I agree a top hunting weapon, but I could use the extra power, does anyone know where I can get the uprated striker spring?

  10. dog. on 2nd Feb 2003

At last i've managed to get an uprated spring it's quite easy what you need to do is get a copy of air gun world, January 2003. It shows you a full strip down of the raider {BUT PLEASE BE CAREFULL}. Once you have managed to strip it down take the striking spring out, and take it to a car accessory shop there they will have a box full of springs and should be able to give you a slightly longer but heaver spring. Mine was off a handbreake cable and is now firing at 19fpt hope this helps.

  11. spooney. on 7th Feb 2003

I think you had more luck than me, I cannot find any record of air gun world, is this the correct name and who is the publisher?

  12. dog. on 12th Feb 2003

For spooney it's definitely called airgun world it comes out once a month i usually get mine from whsmiths if not ask your local newsagent if they can order you it in hope this helps happy shooting

  13. Fred. on 25th Feb 2003

I have tried everywhere for the January copy of this magazine - including the publishers. Nobody has a copy. Anyone care to make a copy of the article and post it on a web site somewhere ?

  14. Steve Reay. on 6th Apr 2003

    Anyone able to help me?
I need to know how to exhaust the air in my raider in order to change the striker sping.
I know I can put 100 or so rounds through it but there MUST be an easier way.
    Thanks in anticipation.

  15. Anlane. on 9th Apr 2003

Did anybody out their have copies of the raider upgrade in the airgun world issue jan 2003.Please give details.

  16. DOG. on 5th May 2003

this is the address for airgun worlds publisher, romsey publishing co.ltd, 4 the courtyard, denmark street, wokingham, berkshire rg40 2az.telephone 0118 977 1677. to de-pressurise strip the stock off remove the trigger mechanism and carfully push a screwdriver down the back of the gun, it will hit the stricking valve and de-pressurise it, but keep your fingers out of the way.hope this helps.airgun world web site is www.airgun-magazines.co.uk

  17. spooney. on 5th May 2003

I phoned the publisher and a couple of days later had a Januarys copy, I agree with dog, a very useful article

  18. Jim S. on 13th May 2003

I have just bought a 2 shot raider. Does all your comments about changing striker springs apply to this gun?

  19. spooney. on 15th May 2003

The Jan issue covers the striker spring on both single and two shot raiders, definately worth getting a copy

  20. dean. on 16th May 2003

can somebody tell me how on earth they can take the raider to power levels exceeding 25ftlbs, when in the manual it says tampering with the valving system can make the gun inconsistant? or something to that affect.
    Could come in useful!!!
    Thanks.
P.S. does anyone know how to turn up the power of an Air Arms s410?
    Dean.

  21. joe. on 2nd Jun 2003

I just bought a used 2-shot Webley Raider and I'm finding the bolt very stiff when sliding it to the forward position when loading. It does give eventually but seems excessively stiff. Is this normal?

  22. Joe. on 3rd Jun 2003

****update to the problem I mentioned earlier: after playing around yesterday, I found that the bolt moves freely back and forth when a pellet is not loaded and the problem only occurs when a pellet is introduced via the shuttle, so i assume that there is a problem with the transfer of the pellet when the forward action of the bolt chambers the pellet. Going to have to get inside and have a look around the shuttle/chamber mechanism, any tips???

  23. Ian. on 4th Jun 2003

Before upping the power on an air weapon above 12ft Lbs - please bear in mind that it then becomes a firearm and the Prison sentence for this offence could be as much as 5 years!!!

  24. GUY. on 27th Jul 2003

I have just bought a webley raider and have measured its power. It is only 9.8 ftlbs. Does anyone know how to up the power to 12ft lbs (The legal limit)?? Is there a screw to up the power to this level or will i need to get a bigger spring?
Please respond as i hate it when i do not kill bunnies outright because the power is too low!!
    guy@nunnerley134.freeserve.co.uk

  25. spooney. on 29th Jul 2003

That sounds about right, manufacturers always set guns at around that level to ensure manufacturing variablity does not take you above 12 ftlbs, trust me they know what they are doing, my advise is don't mess if it aint broke.
However if you do want to take it closer to 12, you will need to replace the spring (the screw on the back wont help you and may cause a dangerous leak, on this gun anyhow), either by trial, mesurement and error or learn your subject and then calculate (or find a freindly gunsmith)

If you’re Raider was low on power when you bought it, as was mine. All I did was took it back to the gun dealer's and they sent it to Webley for it to be calibrated free of charge. It came back 3 days later. The first thing I did was fire it through a Chrono and it was at 11.5 ftlb. I'd like to say thanks to all at Forest Lodge Guns in Wragby. Who are the most helpful company I have come across. (they even lent me another gun while mine went back to Webley)

  28. Hilt on 16th Sep 2004

Hi all, I purchased a raider last week and did the mod on the spring. I would like to say it has transformed the gun completely got the spring from R.S components it took a bit to get the right tension spring. If it is too hard it will press the valve in when fitting the end cap back on. The gun has the standard silencer fitted which was fine before the tune! but is a lot louder now could someone please recommend a good silencer for this. Also thinking of fitting a bipod any comments would be appreciated.

    Many thanx Alan

Yes,I'd love to know the RS stock number as well

  32. DingleRoad Rank: Lance Corporal on 31st Oct 2004

I would also like to know the stock number of the spring ??

  33. DingleRoad Rank: Lance Corporal on 5th Nov 2004

Can anybody sell me an Airgun World (jan03) as they have run out at the publishers

  34. DingleRoad Rank: Lance Corporal on 13th Nov 2004

You don't need to replace the spring at all. Between the spring and adjustment screw is a washer. If you want to decrease power, remove the washer or to turn things up, just add more washers. Mine is now at 12fpe, but I had to try and see how far it would go. With 8 extra washers, I got it up to 16 fpe.

Ive recently purchased a raider 10 shot. i didnt buy a pump at the time as i thought i could manage filling up at the local dive shop. There isnt one...oops, Is there a pump anybody would recommend, is it specific to the Raider, and where is the best/cheapest place to buy one (i assumed Webley would sell them but everything seems to go through dealers.)
