Good Points

Cheap for new customers, easy to apply , UK call centre.

Bad Points

The basic price looks good, but on top there are loads of faffy "extras" which are compulsory. Be sure to cancel your "automatic renewal"!

General Comments

The Post Office were a lot cheaper than my existing insurer, particularly as they were offering a £50 cashback at the time. Contrary to what I've heard other people say, this £50 appeared in the form of a postal order quite quickly.

The only problem I had was that at renewal, I was billed for extras such as "emergency boiler callout" and "protection of underground services" etc. I called to renew and asked to opt out of these products (doing so would have kept my premium pretty much the same as the year before). I was told that it was not possible to do this. When I asked to confirm this with a manager/supervisor I was told that this also wasn't possible. I suggested I would look elsewhere for insurance in that case and was greeted with an apathetic "take it or leave it".

It is my guess that these extras are lumped in to boost profit after a year of high payouts (2007), and bank on the customer's laziness for a renewal.

I get the feeling, that insurance, being a relatively new Post Office subsidiary, isn't really though through yet. They are just buying "off the shelf" policies and subbing them out to customers for a percentage. I fear I would have had a fight on my hands should I have had to claim in the year I was a Post Office customer.
