General Comments

Prepare to be spoiled! I purchased a 54 in .22 cal after a bad experience with a 48 (see my RWS 48 review) -- and after purchasing an RWS 350. All I can say is -- what a gun!

As I said, this rifle WILL spoil you. The lack of felt recoil makes it almost seem like you're not firing at all. I have had to force myself to shoot my 350 at times simply to keep "on my game" with other rifles.

As a whole, I've had nothing but great experiences with this rifle (since getting it in October of '07). I did have one issue with the rear sight -- the little cylindrical pin that holds the rear sight top and bottom pieces together kept creeping out the right side of the sight (possibly due to the 54's powerful slam to absorb felt recoil). After pushing it back in a few times (and scratching my bluing once!), I finally removed the rear sight entirely, along with the front sight blade.

Other than that, however, the rifle is outstanding. Pine cones from 50-60 yards are no problem for the 54. I have a cheap Leapers scope on it (with a one piece Accushot mount and a small shim), and it works great. Like many, I mount all of my one-piece mounts on RWS rifles BACKWARDS, hanging the stop pin in front of the rail -- NOT against the rail's rear screwhead. The scope hasn't moved at all (3000+ shots).

The 54 handles most pellets pretty well, but after testing dozens, I've settled on: AirArms Field domed 16gr. (by JSB) and JSB Exacts (15.9gr., both 5.50 and 5.52). Benjamin Domed and Crosman Premiers (same pellets basically @ 14.3 gr.) also work well.

The sliding action does take some getting used to, as it can move around on you if you tilt the rifle upward or downward when un-cocked, but that's nothing major.

While I've never fired a TX200 or a HW77/97 before, I can't see how they'd be any more accurate than the 54, and even if they are, the 54 trumps them in power -- a tradeoff I'll take!

I currently own only an RWS 350 and an RWS 54, both in .22 -- and the 54 is an outstanding piece!
