ChrisJJ's Review of Lycos www.lycos.co.uk

Overall Rating
Not a Single One in my experience
Bad Points
In my opinion and experience... over priced, unhelpful, rude at times, ancient control panel, continuous downtime, no refunds if you cancel your contract, still held liable for anything that happens even after canceling the contract, the list goes on...
General Comments
LYCOS what can I say about them, well in my experience and opinion... -
- Overpriced
- Unhelpful customers support
- Unhelpful technical support
- Lack of customer focus
- Pathetic "one click" packages that are open to hacking
- A very bad hosting company
- Webftp that rarely works
- Ancient control panel
Right that is for starters, now to explain, you pay for a domain (standard rate) then a hosting package for that one domain, so for one .com on an annual basis could cost in excess of £100. As far as I am aware you cannot even add multiple domains to a package, that would be too easy in my opinion.
You have to log any support issues through their ancient control panel interface which fails constantly in my experience. If you are lucky you will receive an automated response (although I placed 12 support requests about domain transfers and received 2 responses, I then had to send a further 5 emails to get things started). Lycos claim if you do not receive an automated response then they do not believe you posted a request properly. Fair enough...
But, in my opinion the support is totally unhelpful, when you try to move your domain away, there are no details on how to do it and you physically have to request instructions from them. When you do request a domain transfer, as far as I am concerned they will not confirm whether it is happening or not and refuse to assist since "technical support do not deal with that".
I could rant for hours over LYCOS, but seriously compare the market if you are after a hosting company, one that doesn't charge on a UK 0870 number to answer any support call and put you in a queue for 15 minutes, then cut you off or have the rather unhelpful support.
I cannot believe how many times my sites have been unavailable due to "maintenance" or "technical issues" and not a penny in compensation.
Best of all, as far as I aware, when you want to cancel your contract, you now have to print out a form (for each domain you own) and then fax it back or post it (this shows how technically advanced they are, they won't accept electronic communication).
Seriously I do not recommend Lycos.co.uk.

In my experience, I pay for a hosting package and domain on a yearly basis, when I came to cancel, as far as I am aware they kept all of my information because I did not cancel in the first 30 days. Even worse than that, as far as I am concerned they also said that I am fully liable for all charges against the domain and hosting package held with them until the end of the year, even when I have canceled.
Seriously I do not recommend Lycos.co.uk..
