Free, cheap and easy to use!
No technical Help for Free version.
No facility for reporting a 'bug'!
I have been using for AV Anti-virus for some time now and it has never let me down - till now!
Today 20/02/2008 I've run AVG 7.5 (version 7.5.516 with virus base 269.20.9/1290) virus test on my Win95/Win2000 dual-boot PC.
The test found the following file(s) as threat(s):
File Results/Infection Path
---- ------------------ ----
1) DELETE.BAT Virus Found BAT/Deleter C:\IMAGE\TOOLS\DELETE.BAT
2) DELETE.BAT Virus Found BAT/Deleter C:\IMAGE\DRIVE\DRIVE.399:\IMAGE\TOOLS\DELETE.BAT
3) DRIVE.399 Virus Found BAT/Deleter C:\IMAGE\DRIVE\DRIVE.399
A quick peek into these files reveals the following info:
Name Size Type Modified
---- ------ ---- ----
1) DLETE.BAT 1Kb MS-DOS Batch File 04/09/1997 08:44
2) DLETE.BAT (Hidden file? Can not find it in list!)
3) DRIVE.399 1,423Kb 399 File 12/12/1997 18:18
I compared above files on C:\Win95 (Windows 95 Primary partition) to a backup copy on another partition G:\Win95 (DOS partition) on my PC that I saved some time and I did not see any difference eg file size, type, date of modification!
Also, I am very surprised why previous AVG tests (from early AGV 6 in late 2005/early 2006 to AGV 7.5) NEVER caught these files.
Therefore, based on above files info and my files comparison, I think these files might had been part of a "Recovery Diskette" program that came with my Time Computers PC in Feb 1998 - and have nothing to do with a virus at all!
The Recovery Diskette is basically a small, 'compressed?' utility program that reverts (or at least tries) the PC back to its factory settings by wiping all current contents and replacing them with original programs - including Windows 95.
That's, an automatic troubleshooting in the event of severe malfunction(s) that can not be solved manually! In short, it is similar to 'System Restore' preloaded with many PC World, Dell etc computers.
In short, is this due to a NEW virus description/database?
A New 'Bug' in AVG 7.5 (version 7.5.516 with virus base 269.20.9/1290) which did NOT exist in previous AVG Programs including AVG 7.5?
Also, my Broadband Internet automatically disconnects every 1-2 mintues continuesly (which it NEVER did before)!
I wonder if this has anything to do with DELETE.BAT being detected a virus!
Now, I can not just rely on AVG test results and simply delete/heal/quarantine these important 'system' files!
Nor can I keep a virus that's threatning my entire computer!
Please, help.
