The film has a huge amount of potential, the ideas really do create an exciting premise. The stylish shooting of the film is a real plus, with wonderful use of the exotic settings used. Jamie Bell and Samuel L Jackson inject excitement, charisma and real pace to the film with their goodies (or is he?) baddie (definitely) roles within the film.
Hayden Christensen is just wooden and uninspiring. Full Stop. I hated him in the Star Wars films and now again he does nothing but look a bit upset and maybe confused. Rachel Bilson is likeable and attractive as always, but there was just no chemistry between the two leads, there would have been more chemistry between a dead starfish and an Ikea table.
The story is built up slowly and methodically, with a good setup and development, utilising some wonderful, exciting set pieces. Then it just ends, when we were just getting interested. Now, I know they are thinking this might be a franchise, but leaving the two best actors in the film, Bell and Jackson hanging out on a limb with no kind of resolution at all? you leave feeling so many things have been left unexplored, from the potential of the powers of the jumpers to the complete lack of screen time for Diane Lane as the Main character's mum.
All in all I really hope that they make a sequel - because leaving it like this will be really frustrating. The bell character seems actually much more interesting than Christensen and they should have more screen time together. Liman shows again he is a great director, with wonderful touches of class throughout, but it feels like this is just half a movie, with so much more to give. Why do the paladins hunt the Jumpers for instance? Why haven't the paladins dealt with/killed Lane's absent mum if they can find jumpers, a normal human shouldn't be a problem? All in all - a lot of potential, but naff all pay off.
