Good Points

Didn't get that far.

Bad Points

Software didn't like either of the two computers I put it on. They're both normally very well behaved. The web site was, in several knowledgable peoples opinion, terrible. I ended up returning the camera and will select another more carefully.

General Comments

What can I say. I own an Olympus SLR, never had any probs. I did read another review in which the punter seemed to have had pretty much the same experiences as me. I was also told that Olympus copies much of they're software from other companies, something I'm not in a position to comment on.

If one has a novice experience with computers and software. One should have no trouble with the C700. The C700 performs quite well on a Micron 667Mh system, as well as a white box 266mmx.

I wonder what Operating system this person was using. If it is pre-win2000, then the computer would not automatically accept the camera, he would need to run the add hardware configuration. Not enough information to determine what his problem was, and it seems he gave up instead of investigating.

Why would anyone spend $600 on a camera and then use the free software that comes with it?
It's a shame that a solid contender in the market should have its review marred by someone that doesn't understand the technology that they purchased.
The ease-of-use, optics and combination of manual and automatic controls on this camera are superb.
I give it an unqualified 10!

It's not clear what this guy's problem was. I tossed the CD that came with my C700, since Linux and any version of Windows since at least Windows 98 knows about usb-storage devices. I use the camera exclusively with Linux and love it. I use mainly ImageMagic for post-processing. Sure, I'd like a real manual focusing ring, a sharper viewfinder, a larger display, etc, but it's great for the price.

What a shame this reviewer had to spoil the C700 overall score. I've used this camera and the C1 Zoom with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and never had any problems. The camera itself is fantastic to use and it's price has just dropped by 25% in the UK. Can now buy one for £375 inc VAT and delivery.

Maybe this guy was using Win NT, without USB support. I agree that slamming the camera because his computer would not work with the software/camera is wrong.

I am in the market for a Digital camera, looking closely at the C700. I can't express how completely useless to me this review is. Surely your experience with the software, and obvious ineptitude with computers is not grounds for trashing the camera? Comment on the camera primarily, mention the software as a potential negative if necessary.

Using the C700 with a Mac is a breeze as iPhoto (an Apple freebie) fires up as soon as you make the USB connection. No other software required. Perhaps you threw away the wrong bit of hardware !

Obviously this reviewer has a lot to learn about digital cameras and even more to learn about computers! I am a proud owner of a C700 and am very satisfied with the performance of the camera and the software provided. As an architect, I use the C700 as a critical tool in all phases of my work and find it to expand my creative potential!

Perhaps if this reviewer followed the instructions for downloading the software (very clear and concise), he would not have become discouraged and discovered the obvious potential this camera offers!

    HIS LOSS!!!!

The C700 works fine under Win XP, and gets a drive letter, but I had problems with Win ME, on a 933 MHz Gateway PC. The owner said it had once worked on that machine, but it wasn't when he called me. Even a fresh install of ME did not solve problem. And the Canon scanner/FAX/printer that had been working prior to the ME reload was no longer recognized by USB afterwards either. This camera is NOT listed as WIA compatible with Win ME on the official Microsoft list - only serial Olympus cameras are. The Olympus documents CLAIM the camera is recognized automatically by WinME upward, and can be used with Win98 with a USB driver provided on the CD and the Olympus website. In ME, Add New Hardware DOES NOT list this model under imaging devices! You might be able to manually add it as a STORAGE device -we didn't try that.
