A few months ago we noticed a credit card in my wife's name had charges that seemed unfamiliar. This HSBC card included charges for AIG Insurance and Pro-Budget and Pro-Buyers... none of which she was familiar with.

In researching this, we find that, basically, these are promoted by HSBC. Companies or representatives are allowed to call HSBC customers and set up an account (which is not fully clear... or even to someone else on the phone other than the cardholder) for which they will bill you monthly until you discover this.

In this case, there have been charges to this card for several years.

"There ought be a law..." against allowing 1) phone solicitation without a signed agreement, and 2) continuous billing (particularly for anything in excess of one year) without a new "SIGNED" authorization by the cardholder noting that they understand the premium charge and service provided.
