gmosher's review of Selmer Reference 54 tenor

“This horn is so expensive that you really need to want...”

Written on: 10/02/2008 by gmosher (1 review written)

Good Points
This horn sounds great in all ranges - even from middle D to middle G! I can effortlessly subtone most notes or blow so loudly I knock my friend trombonist over. The upper register - again ... magic. The altissimo just sings - in tune. Also, I don't have to fight to keep the lower and upper register in tune.

Bad Points
Although the look is great, many other companies are beginning to copy-cat this horn.

General Comments
This horn is so expensive that you really need to want a first-rate horn. However, I haven't played a sax that comes close to the overall playability tone and 'sexiness' of the Reference 54. Years after my purchase I don't regret it one bit. In fact, now I'm saving my thousands for a Reference Alto
