For my Cloverfield review I can honestly say I really don't know what to make of the movie as I neither loved it or hated it. On one hand; the plot was one dimensional, the story undeveloped and the ending somewhat blunt, but then on the other hand it was a truly original piece of film making and one should not expect anything more from a movie shot from a single camera in this manner.
Basically, events are shown first hand through the eyes of a group experiencing the devastation caused by a huge monster attacking New York City. What you see is what's supposedly caught on their camera, nothing more, nothing less. No build up, no climax, little insight into characters (apart from the basics - going away party, the girl...)
If you're looking for a monster flick with a beginning, middle and end then you may be disappointed. This film leaves a lot to the imagination & if you can cope with that, then go see it, enjoy it for what it is. I've a feeling though that due to the hype, a lot of people will have been let down. I can't help thinking that the 'unique' shooting style is the movie's sole selling point, which to me makes it somewhat gimmicky and although different from your usual Hollywood blockbuster, it still lacked the grittiness I was expecting from a film dubbed 'a cross between Blair With and Godzilla'
Still, what it does manage to do is be different from anything else at the moment and if you are open minded then you might just love it.
