Gripping from start to finish
Trailer perhaps revealed a little too much
I don't usually watch thrillers but this film was intriguing enough for me to go to the cinema. I was not disappointed. I was gripped from start to finish, as was the rest of the audience, who were silent throughout.
I'm not going to give a synopsis because I believe you will enjoy the film more if you don't know what to expect. Just believe me when I say this is a high quality production. I had seen the trailer recently online, and I think it revealed too much, so avoid it if you can. Just go along to the cinema with an open mind and enjoy Cloverfield as a thrilling 85 minutes.
A few comments on the production: The idea is well-conceived, and certainly bucks the trend of massively budgeted, over-the-top Hollywood movies. That said, the effects budget was well spent as it was totally seamless. The cast were pretty good. I think it was an advantage that they were relative unknowns. The story was a little contrived in that the main characters made some decisions that unnecessarily put them in danger. However, for the majority of the film they made the sort of decisions that you would expect from people in a crisis situation.
Overall, a very believable film shot from an unusual viewpoint, with thrills and action all mixed together expertly. This film may not be for everyone, but people who appreciate film-making should enjoy this.
