PatrickT's Review of Sony Ericsson P990i
23rd Jan 2008
Overall Rating
- Value for money

WiFi, MS Duo Pro Support, Powerful handset, Multimedia capabilities
Bad Points
Size, OS, Sony Ericsson / Orange denying access to all files on the phone. Slow response times, awkward buttons, and poor quality camera.
General Comments
I've owned the p800, the p900, the p910, and now have the p990... and have to say that they seem to get worse with time... Clunkier, more restrictive, and more prone to lag, and slow response times. Whether it's to do with my phone being an Orange model or not I don't know, but start up and shut down times are risible... It's a phone, and it takes nearly 40 seconds to start up... Ridiculous.
In all fairness the p910 was actually my favourite, with the addition of software like Sman, Tracker and Smartmovie... it became the device it was supposed to be. Completely accessible, able to play Divx files, and quick and responsive.
This will almost certainly be the last time I buy from the SE P series... I've had enough... bloated, restricted, and underpowered. The only reason I bought it was an upgrade from the p910 contract was free.. on a tariff that gave more for less money...

I completely agree with everything in this review. I have owned the p800, the p900 and then the p990. I liked the p800, loved the p900, but the p990 has been fully disappointing and I will also not be buying into this series again. By using the symbian operating system, these phones are supposed to be far quicker and more responsive than windows mobiles. However the lag and unresponsiveness is laughable on such a top end phone. It takes mine around fifteen seconds to EXIT the messaging app!
There are many bugs and issues with this phone. Unfortunately, the P1 is just a variation on this phone. While it looks better, I know that it will not be up to scratch. S-E are now working on the successor to this series, called either the P3 or P5. Apparently its a complete redesign. Not before time, but my confidence in this series has been killed.
