Good Points

Superb performance even in Standard Form.
Great Power to Weight Ratio
Good Build quality
Excellent Trim compared to it's rivals
Roomy for such a compact car.
Reliability
Superb handling and roadholding
Excellent ride
Feels like a much bigger car.
Extremely reliable and well screwed together

Bad Points

As the body was designed in the late 70's, the Rover Metro inherited the few weaknesses from the earlier Metro that were not eliminated when the car was redesigned.

Namely the old rust problems to the rear of the car.

The gearbox on the GTI is also a little marginal ( made by Peugeot )and I have heard of early failures.

General Comments

I bought my Flame Red 1990 SPI Rover Metro GTI in 1992 with 8500 miles on the clock. It now has 54000 from new. It is mint and is probably one of the finest GTI's in existence. It is Motobuild of Hounslow modified - 2" bore exhaust ( it sounds gorgeous just like a BTCC car )& PiperCross Air Filter. Just these simple mods have increased the power on the Rolling Road from 95 to 108bhp. Torque is up too. These figures beat the MPI car in standard form. I am glad that it does not need a power absorbing cat.It has great roadholding and is easily the best handling car I have ever driven. It rides like a much bigger car too. Remember that " What Car " voted the new Rover Metro, the Best Small Car in the World when it came out in 1990.It had some stiff competition too. Last year I used it as the Course Car during a Race Meeting at Snetterton. The Clerk of the Course was shocked when I sailed through Coram at 85-90mph. :-) I will never sell her because she is simply irreplaceable, I drove the new Mini Cooper the other day around Silverstone. It nearly understeered off the track, something the GTI would never do. The GTI's Test Report was compared to the Peugeout 205 GTI 1.9 in it's handling excellence. Let's hope that the new MG Metro, if it comes out, will be as good as it's predecessor, the Rover Metro GTI.
