Homebase is the nearest diy store to my home.
Homebase doesn't seem to be able to make up its mind whether it's a diy or a home furnishings store.
Two recent poor experiences:
(1) Toilet flushing lever broke. Homebase had a "choice" of two - one identical to my broken one, which I now knew was plastic inside, that's why it broke, the other was metal, which I bought. It was a lousy fit, wobbled about in every direction, due to amateurish design. I emailed them to say, politely, they should be ashamed to sell stuff like this. They were concerned and said if I supplied my address they'd send a cheque for the value of the item. I never received a cheque, in spite of sending a gentle reminder, but as it was only for '£7 I didn't pursue it.
(2) I bought a fibre optic christmas tree for '£50 in December 2006, and put it up on 15th. After just six days the lights failed to work. Being an engineer, I worked out the transformer had failed. I took this back to the store, hoping they would simply swap it for another one. I was told they had sold every one of those trees and if I bought the tree back they would give me a refund. I found this a bit hard to swallow, for it looked to me as though they had simply cleared every christmas item out of the store in preparation for the forthcoming sales. I had to remove all the decorations from my tree, pack it in its box, and take it back for my refund. After this I spent the rest of the day dashing around in search of a comparable tree, which was not easy on 21st December.
My gripe with Homebase is that they were happy to take '£50 off me in the first place, but the company had not allowed for any backup whatsoever for unfortunate customers like me whose purchases turned out to be faulty, nor, I must say, did I receive much sympathy. In a nutshell, their attitude could be summed up as, "Tough luck, have a refund, and if you have a miserable christmas with no tree that's not our problem."
Next time I need some diy goods, I'll be driving on past Homebase to someone else!
