Final good service; caring staff; nice surprise.
Tough at first to get empathy.
I have flown 7 times to Incheon/Seoul from Vancouver over the last 3 years with Singapore Airlines, and my family (my wife is Korean, I am Canadian) flies at least 2 times a year as well (parents, siblings, in-laws). I always preferred SIA because of its good service, pleasing staff (yes, looks do matter on an 11-hour flight) and competitive pricing.
On my latest flight the departure dates were a moving target. We were unsure when I was needed in Seoul, but after booking a date we thought made sense found that I needed to go a day earlier. I enquired to the travel agent and she said it would be no problem to take an earlier flight, provided there was room. I should go plenty early and get on the waiting list. Sounded good (and cheaper than a 25% late-changing fee).
So I went over 3 hours early and got my name on the list. The lady at YVR (a Korean, who knows our family from years of flying) said there would likely be a seat as the loads looked light. Upon inspection of my tickets, however, a rather stern SIA gent said that a $250 fee was in order because they needed to change the first departure date on my ticket (for some reason the first departure written on the ticket MUST be used, unlike the return departure date which can be simply changed in the computer system). Yikes! Not a tremendous deal, but not exactly what my agent had told me. Apparently there was no way around it.
After some haggling in both languages (and much time passing) the agent agreed to make good on her error and to refund the $250 I'd need to pay. (The office is Pagoda Travel in Coquitlam, BC, and because of this I have to use them from now on, of course.)
So I forked over the money and made my way to the gate. The usual preboarding announcements were done and then my name was called. I thought that somehow I was getting kicked off the flight (being a waiting-list I thought I'd be the first to go). Happily, it was the nice Korean gal from the check-in counter. She said I was being upgraded to Raffles/Business Class. Wow. I guess she figured my frustration should be soothed...and it was.
Thank you Singapore Airlines.
