The lack of any real warranty

After moving into a new flat I needed a new vacuum cleaner, and I didn't want to wait for delivery. Last month I took myself down to my local Currys store in Kingston Upon Thames and purchased a VAX. My flat is only small, and therefore I usually use a handheld vacuum, so the second time that the VAX (the first being a test after assembly) was used was some 5 weeks after purchase.
Within 2 minutes of starting it up it cut out. I waited an hour before the motor had cooled enough to use again. It took me the entire day to sporadically clean my small flat at hourly intervals.
I took the VAX back to the store the following day where I was told, despite the cleaner being as new having been used just ONCE, I could not have a replacement as it was purchased over 28 days ago (JUST!!). I spent 20 minutes in the store and even offered to pay the difference to get a more expensive model, but was told that I would have to take it 5 miles away and have a free 'repair' and be without a cleaner in the meantime. It's patently clear that the product was faulty when purchased, but I couldn't get a refund or replacement!
I left the store, my telephone number AND the useless VAX cleaner with them. I've been told if VAX refund Currys then they in turn will refund me, but I'm not holding my breath.
What a shambles! I'll never pass another pound over their counter. It's John Lewis with their second-to-none service for all future electrical purchases for me!
