I went for my 40th birthday in January this year 2003, what a holiday. Grand Baie is lovely, and about a 15 minute walk from the Merville Beach. The Merville Beach hotel was spottlessly clean and the staff were very helpful and most kind. I was given a birthday cake for my birthday and a anniversary meal for myself and my husband. They even went as far to put petals everywhere in our room in the evening, such a lovely guesture. We hired a taxi for the day and told the driver where we wanted to go, we agreed a price before leaving and he showed us other interesting places as well. The climate in January is the rainy season, short am or pm sharp bursts, but the humidity is a real problem, it was 100% each day we were there. The entertainment was ok for the first week but got a bit tedious in the second, but the heat and humidity knocks you out. A lot of french people go to Mauritius and whilst we were there large French parties made a lot of noise in the evening by the bar. If you are all inclusive you just sign a bill with your room number and there is obviously no charge. I really couldn't fault the hotel, location was perfect, our room was out of this world, try getting the rooms at the end of the hotel looking out to sea. We shared our room with a few lizards, but they didn't bother us, super holiday and would recommend this hotel, a must to go to Mauritius.

I cannot agree at all that the Merville Beach Hotel is spotlessly clean. I would not go back there for this reason. My main concern and I'm sure the reason why so many people were ill on our holiday is because the local wildlife is allowed full run of the restaurant, including birds landing on the tables, cutlery etc. and worse of all at 7.00am in the morning have free access to hopping in and out of the breakfast cereals.

I have just returned from the Merville on 25.02.04
after spending one week there and two weeks at the Silver Beach hotel on the east coast. The Silver Beach hotel was only a 3 star but the service and pleasantness of all the staff there were 100% better. The Merville is overrated and cramped. The charges for the mini bar in our room was extortonate compared to the fact that the mini bar at the Silver Beach was free. We had booked 3 weeks at the Silver Beach but it was overbooked on our third week and they asked us if we would like to try a different hotel, this we agreed. The Merville first appearance is very immpressive but it lacks a lot. I am glad i had not paid to go there. The hotel was clean and there is not a lot you can do about the wildlife it was the same at both hotels. Merville beach food was very overrated and the servive was terrible you would wait a good hour for your food to be served. I will not be returning

I am so sorry to hear your reports about the Merville Hotel, I guess the time I went I was very lucky, but obviously since then the hotel has new management and it seems to have gone down hill!!!! I am off to the Hotel Maritim in October, somehow I think this is going to be a much superior hotel.

I noted on the last review that the person was going to the maritim hotel and was looking forward to this, have they seen any reviews concerning this hotel as I have booked to go in November 2004 for my weddding and my 40th so the stakes are quite high to give me the perfect holiday/honeymoon!!

Hi there, yes we as a group are also going to the Maritim for my friends wedding in October and also a child's 8th birthday. A friend of a friend went for their honeymoon 2 yrs back at the Maritim and said it was out of this world. Also we know a couple who go every January and will only go to the Maritim. When I left the Merville Beach last year we stopped off at the Maritim to pick up a couple for the airport, they could only praise the hotel and from what I saw, the reception area and driveway, the massive gardens etc, it looks absolutely beautiful, personally just from what I saw I would say you have no worries, when I come back I shall let you know all about it, forward me your email address.

We are thinking of spending a week at the start of our honeymoon in January 2005 in Mauritius. The travel agent has put together a couple of packages, however a week in Mauritius obviously does not come cheap!! The first quote was for Le Touessrok, but although it looks fabulous, it is simply too pricey. The second quote is for the Merville Beach, which he recommends personally, having stayed there, however, it is still really expensive. I have been put off a little by most of the reviews, and worry about spending so much on a hotel that might disappoint on such an important holiday. Any comments??

We got our original price from the internet by travelinmauritius and then discovered the travel company was Sunset and negotiated prices with the travel agent. I suggest you do this and haggle for a good price!!!!! We got a price match and then 6% off and free gold insurance.
I have heard hence why we are going back in October that the Maritim is superb, and also fairly reasonable priced 4* hotel. I have looked up reviews and cannot see one bad report, to me that is a good enough omen. Try www.tripadvisor.com, they also receive write-ups, I shall post a report once I am back and let you know all about it, ok.

We are going for a special anniversary in November. My husband cannot cope with a hotel that is not close to activity in a town or resort. Too much sun, sea and beach is too boring for him. We are really looking forward to it so hope that the reviews which are not so glowing are very personal and that most people enjoy their holiday there

I am going to the Merville Beach in just a couple of weeks (October 2004) for my honeymoon. Really looking forward to it. Hope the weather in October is lovely and hot! We are going all Inclusive, so hope the food has improved since the bad reviews about it!

Does anyone know if the Hotel Merville supplies beach towels to its clients, also does anyone know what the hotel's email address is?

Hi Eddy. Merville supply very nice beach towels which you can exchange as often as you like at the boathouse. Email: Merville@naiade.com . Website

Have just returned from my honeymoon from Merville Beach. It was lovely. How anyone can knock the staff is beyond me. They are very helpful and friendly at all times. We had a fantastic room, a stones throw from the beach. The entertainment did get a bit tedious. The best night being a Friday where they have a live Sega show. The gardens are immaculately kept, and rooms are cleaned twice a day. Just be prepared to do things at Mauritian time. You may have to wait a while for lunch, if you don't have the buffet which is provided everyday, but what have you got to rush for?!

We have just returned from a fantasic two weeks at Merville beach. The staff could not be more helpful or polite if they tried. The Hotel was spotless and the rooms were very well looked after. The meals were either buffet or a choice from the menu, but in both case's the standard was very good Sometimes you may have wait, but it depends on what time you eat. The water sports on offer were very well run and the equipment well looked after.
