If done correctly, hair looks fantastic! Shiny, soft, healthy! You will feel like a celebrity!
You wont notice the bad points until later on.Excessive shedding of hair!
Ok, If you are thinking about getting the Japanese Hair Straightening done, read this first.I had the "Yuko" Japanese Hair Straightening done to my hair in October 2003. I found a Japanese Salon in West Los Angeles, California, that was on a list of top salons that offer this unique service. Yuko is the original patented formula..So this is the only version I would go with if you are going to get it done. Google search Yuko System to find out more. Any how, my normal hair is extremely long, thick and semi wavy. Slightly frizzy...just overall not manageable. So, after hearing about so many celebrities getting this done, I decided to try it myself. The salon I went to was completely Japanese owned and all of the stylists were from Tokyo. The owner had been trained by the original people of "Yuko" in Japan and had even had a few articles written about her in the L.A. area. Many celebrities go to this salon for the treatment, so I knew I'd be in good hands. My first treatment in October 03 came out perfect. As did the next 6 times I had it re-done/touched up. And just so you know, if the salon that is doing this straightening is doing the original "Yuko" version, there really is no such thing as a "touch up". They actually have to re-do the entire hair in order to make sure it all looks the same. Any place that only does the roots for a touch up , You should expect to pay full price each time you get a touch up. This is typically every 6 months as the regrowth of curls start to show. Now, keep this in mind. Each of the 6 times I've had it done since 2003, it has been heaven sent. Straight, sleek, soft, shiny hair that honestly looks like you've just walked out of a salon every single day. People couldn't believe how great my hair looked. On occasion, I would maybe touch up a few strands with a flat iron, but for the most part...it was wash and go - literally! Anyhow, here's the catch. After about the 4th time I had it done (keep in mind this is every 6 months), I started shedding hair like crazy!! The problem was, I didn't realize that it was the hair straightening that was making my hair shed for another year after that. I thought it was stress, shampoo, the air quality, illness! I was beside myself. And the kicker was that my hair didn't look bad in anyway. It wasn't dry or breaking off. It was the normal straight, shiny beautiful hair I'd had since I started the treatments. However, the shedding of hair was really bizarre. It would always shed from the root, so there was dozens of long hairs everywhere. Not to be confused with breakage. This was actual shedding...as if my body was trying to rid itself of these treated hairs. And the really crazy part was, behind all these dozens of shed hairs...were new hairs growing in right behind it (curly). So it wasn't as though I was losing hair in patches or it was thinning. My scalp was literally ridding itself of these hairs and regrowing new ones right behind them but at an accelerated rate! And let me tell you, this was not normal shedding! This was excessive...and it is still excessive! All of my friends find hair on their clothes, in their cars. My house is like a hairball! Anyhow, I've haven't had it done in over a year now. I'm trying to grow it all out. But it is so horrible to see hairs all over the house, tub, floors! Hairs are everywhere! And it's been like that for the the last few years. My hair still looks fine in the areas where it's still straight. But all the new hairs that are growing in are short and curly, so I literally have to tie my hair up everyday so you can't see all the new short hairs growing in.Well, the moral of this story is...carefully think about this before paying $$$ for something that after a few years will put you right back where you were before you had it done. Yes, it looks fantastic for the first few years. Yes, if you have it done by a proper place (Japanese owned is the only way to go) it will not fry or dry your hair out in any way if it's done CORRECTLY! But, after a few years....it wont be worth it. Take it from me. I just have to stick out the misery of having half curly, half straight hair with shedding like a damn animal until it grows out completely. Not fun! I've also found a few other reviews online where other people have noticed excessive shedding after a few years of getting this done. Please, do your research and talk to people who have had it done more than once or twice to find out the long term effects.
