Great picture, batteries for remote and A/V cable included.
Will not play old audio CD's or CD-R. Excessive heat build up.
Bought this DVD player at WalMart for $159. Setup was a snap with the included A/V cable. I was quickly impressed by the picture quality and apparent solid construction of the player. It was also nice that the remote supplied with my DirecTv (also by RCA) would work without any pesky programming.
Things started going downhill pretty quickly from there: a major reason for purchasing a component DVD player (I already have one on my computer that is hooked to the TV), was to double as an audio CD player. I soon discovered that older CD's and CD-R's will not work in this unit. (CD's made after 1998 seem to work fine) I assume that the "region codes" or some other copy protection scheme designed to cut down on international bootlegging have something to do with this, but really don't care, there are dozens of other DVD players out there of comparable quality that WILL play old CD's and homemade CD-R's. As soon as it was done playing the movie we had already rented, I went to put it back in the box to return it and discovered that this thing gets HOT! Not just warm, but so hot you can't leave your hand on it. To be fair, I DID have it under my DirecTv receiver, but no A/V component should get THAT hot! Bottom line: probably an OK unit if you place it on top of your entertainment center where it can get lots of air, but not for anyone who wants to listen to music discs unless your taste in music is strictly post-1998 commercially produced albums!
