david rigg's review of Audi R8 4.2 quattro

“The Audi R8 has exceeded my expectations, it is a joy...”

★★★★★

Good Points
It is as good it looks and good as the car mags say.
Performance is magic, I do not see me upgrading to a V10 ever.
Road holding is truly outstanding. Before taking delivery, Audi Uk offered a track day at Oulton park to test drive the R8,with instructors from Germany in the lead car, us customers following behind in groups of four, well it was pouring with rain, the instructors had us pick up the pace and no one believed how well it held the road, and the other customers had owned 911, astons etc.
Interior is real class, I choose charcoal leather, black carpets and black headling. It took some thought but I am really pleased as the interior can take this colour scheme without feeling dark, as the black interior in a TT coupe feels very dark, and confined.

Bad Points
The size of the boot up front for some people, maybe too small, although everyone laughs when they see it and I say it takes more shopping that you would think, but it truly does.I pick up my complementary 2 piece fitted leather luggage set this week from Audi, so I am all set for the big trip.
Fuel consumption, what is bad who knows, just knocking around as I have not done any long trips or even motorway in the 2 months since taking delivery, I am returning 15.3mpg. It should do high 20s on a long trip.
The cost of rear tyres is bound to be a bad point when I need some, because the rears are huge.
Audi tell me service costs should be only marginally more than the RS4.( so I guess that should be a good point)
Near celebrity status, could also be good or bad. Hell everybody checks you out as you drive by.

General Comments
The Audi R8 has exceeded my expectations, it is a joy to drive be it around town or on the open road.

Choosing your specification is not easy, as there were no cars around but as said above it can take the black leather, and the two light interiors are very light in the flesh, so not very practical for everyday use.

Extras. Some you would have thought would have been standard are not. eg. stainless steel pedals, and heated seats.

For me one extra well worth having was the advanced audi assisted parking, this is a reversing camera (comes up on the muti media screen which is a standard fitment) as well as the sensors front and rear. It is brilliant, when coming out of my drive the wide angle on the camera lets you see down the road when cars are parked on the roadside, as well as being able to park with confidence.

You need magnetic ride so as to give a smooth ride all the time, otherwise the suspension is for 187 mph capability constantly, when you think about it. Yes it is a lovely ride all the time with the magnetic ride option.

The ac and dehumidify capability in my TTs was good but this is in another league.

R Tronic is excellent, better than the DSG in my 3.2TT in my opinion.

Hope this is some help to any future R8 customers.
