The Samsonite luggage was purchased primarily due to name recognition and their 10 year warranty. The sale price of $300 seemed reasonable for the 3-piece set. The product features were good and the nylon balistic material looked sturdy.
The thread used to attach the plastic zipper ribbing to the cloth zipper backing is made with inferior cotton thread. The Samsonite customer service and the proclaimed 10 year warranty is without merit and of no value.
The Samsonite luggage in question was a 26" roller bag. It was owned for only 5 weeks . The main zipper failed during the it's first air trip to Mexico. The bag was not overpacked and there was no real sign of airline handling abuse. In order to get back home I had to sew the plastic zipper ribbing back onto the cloth zipper backing in four locations, each about 2'' in length , on the two bottom corners of the bag. It was a temporary fix and the only thread available was the hotel sewing kit which contained light weight cotton thread. It took three hours to make the repairs and afterwords the zipper worked like new. Upon return home, I submitted a claim to Samsonite and shipped the bag to their repair facility. In discussing the bag failure with the repair technician, he stated that Samsonite will not warranty zippers, regardless of what the failure was. He also stated that if he repaired the zipper he would use nylon thread and not cotton as Samsonite did. A follow up discussion with a Samsonite customer service representative and later with a customer service supervisor revealed that they considered the zipper failure normal wear and tear and the warranty did not apply, regardless of it's age. They suggested that I submit a claim to the airline for damages. According to the Samsonite web site, their core values are ... "High Quality, Fine Craftmanship, Exceptional Reliability, and Enduring Style". This time they missed 3 out of 4. Also, do not get fooled by their 10 year warrany as it has no real value. In conclusion, no more Samsonite for me !!. I suggest that anyone who is in the market for luggage, research the different products. There is a lot of good information and reviews on the internet. Just because it's a well known brand name like Samsonite does not mean it's a good, reliable product and that they will stand behind it.
